What is emergency medication?

cervical collar, also known as a neck brace, is a type of corset worn around the patient’s neck. Collars are generally preferred to rest the patient in simple neck pain. These types of lanyards are generally made of sponge.

Some collars are made of a harder material and rest on the neck and back. Anteriorly, they rest on the sternum and include the chin. In this case, it is aimed to restrict the patient from moving forward-backward and right-left.

These types of collars are generally preferred after surgical operations (such as platinum placed neck surgery) and their use is mandatory for the periods recommended by the doctor.

It has been observed that the neck collars start to damage the patient’s balance system when they are used for more than three months. It is recommended that you do not drive and avoid similar situations while wearing the neck brace.

Why is Cervical Collar Used?

Cervical collar is generally used for transportation, routine patient care, or to keep the spine stable by preventing it from swinging back and forth and bending or flexing during movement. The neck is like a transfer point. The spinal cord and nerves coming out of the spinal cord contain body structures such as arteries passing through the neck region. This explains how important the human neck is. But the importance of our neck is not limited to this. The neck also supports our head. Sometimes undesirable results can occur in the neck, which is one of the spinal cord points with the highest mobility. When situations such as blows and injuries occur in the neck region, they can affect human life more. Low back and neck pain are seen as the most common cases encountered in the spine. In cases such as soft tissue, ligament injuries, stable bone injuries, neck hernia and neck flattening, the treatment of the neck is supported by using a cervical collar. The source of pain felt in the head, shoulder and arm areas around the neck can also be the neck. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the treatment of diseases caused by the neck.

How Long Should the Cervical Collar Be Used?

This will usually vary depending on the damage to the neck. In mild cases of injury, the use of a collar for 3-4 days may be sufficient, while in more severe cases, this period may be much longer. You should definitely follow your doctor’s instructions when using equipment that assists treatment, such as a cervical collar. Although collars are used for therapeutic purposes, they can start to harm in long-term use.
